Last Days in Seminyak, Bali

We chose Seminyak, Bali as our last destination because of its location to the airport and the time of our flight. It’s a cute little beach town with great restaurants, boutique shops, and adorable cafes.

We were only staying for two days and only spent one day outside of the hotel room.  If you haven’t heard of the Bali Belly, let me be the first to tell you, it’s the worst.  It’s a very common “sickness” that people catch when they arrive in Bali.  This kind of “sickness” occurs frequently in Southeast Asia but every country has their own spin on it.  Thailand has the Thai Tummy and Bali has the Bali Belly.  Let’s make the description short and sweet – no need to gross you out – basically, you need to use the restroom excessively and leaving your hotel room is a big risk because you never know when you’ll need to make a dash to a safe place.

Well, long story short, we caught the Bali Belly on the last full day of our vacation.  Fortunately, we were able to spend one VERY memorable day together in Seminyak.

As I’ve previously written, I love to swim. ABSOLUTELY LOVE IT! If I could be in the water all day long, I would.  As for Sean, he’s never shown that he’s as interested.  That all changed when he saw some waves.  My 25 year old boyfriend turned into the cutest little kid ready to play in the water.  Priceless memories.

He sat patiently waiting for me to set all of our things on our lounge chairs but all I could see was him itching to attack those waves. After I sat down and examined my busted toe he says, “Can we go play in the water now please?”

The next 2 hours were spent throwing ourselves into the waves, attempting to body surf, holding the sand as the waves rolled over our bodies, and my favorite: Sean throwing me straight out of the water and into mid-air to hit a wave at the most uncomfortable angle.  There were times he threw me on his shoulders and tried to stand through an entire wave hitting both of our faces and taking us down.  Obviously some of our games were probably deemed “unsafe and a liability” to the nonexistent lifeguards, but we couldn’t help it!

Sean and I have been together for a few years, have lived together for two, and have been friends for much longer.  We haven’t lost the ability to have fun together and be crazy/annoying/childish (duh! we’re young!). But in the midst of us starting our adult lives together and the distance of our relationship, we haven’t laughed like we did that day in months. We were on a very “adult” vacation.  WE HAD A PRIVATE POOL VILLA FOR GOODNESS SAKES!  But the memories of us accidentally drinking salt water and laughing with (and at) each other were worth more than any other meal, hotel, or luxury we could’ve bought in Bali.  In those 2 hours, I was able to reflect and truly appreciate where we are in our lives together.  I’m forever grateful for those 2 hours spent together playing in the ocean for free because it made me fall even more in love with Sean and I didn’t think it was possible.

We spent half the day at the beach and then made our way back to the hotel when a series of unfortunate events hit our stomachs.  But it was ok! We spent our last day in Bali the best way anyone could – together in the water!

Who knows where in the world we’ll go next!

To My Nigel: Thank you for always bringing a smile to my face and loving me unconditionally.  My life abroad would not be possible without your support and I never take that for granted.  Our vacation was everything I imagined and more because of you.  Thank you for your patience and thank you for allowing me to love you with all my heart every single day.

The saying goes “to love and be loved is the greatest gift of life” – and surely you and Sean are the perfect example of this statement! It makes me so happy to see how happy and in love both of you are–a blessing beyond description. I have a daily calendar and today, June 1st it reads “Love is always bestowed as a gift….freely, willingly, and without expectation….We don’t love to be loved; we love to love” – and my beautiful granddaughter YOU ARE LOVED.!!!

Hi Katherine, I’m just catching up on emails as I’ve been traveling this past week!

Fantastic update, however the “Bali Belli” was a bit too graphic 😉 It sounds like you two lovebirds had a blast, not to mention great memories to last a lifetime!

    Keep the adventure blogs coming.

    xoxoxo Uncle Steve
